Students should know syllable types and be familiar with the 44 phonemes and spelling rules and the various spellings of vowel sounds to be effective spellers.

Teach spelling in a FUN way!

  • Create rhymes and raps to help remember spelling or find raps online. Here is an example of a rap to help memorize a spelling rule:

  • Create a classroom spelling wall – students can write the new words they find or go to the wall and sketch pictures of new words.
  • Make a crossword puzzle – students can make crosswords for others to solve.
  • Jumble word – give students the letters to the new word. They must unscramble the letters.
  • Arts and crafts – creatively spell the word using different materials.
  • Heads Up forehead game – the word is taped to a child’s head. The child who has the mystery spelling word on his head must ask questions and guess the word. If the word is guessed, the child must spell it. (For example, the child will ask – Is it a noun? Does it start with a consonant? Is it an animal?…)
  • Build a Word Train – put each new word on a bit of paper. Students organize the words based on creative categories such as # of letters by beginning letter, putting in ABC order, create a sentence using each word as the first word…
